Funny uranium yellow bowl and underplate
« on: March 24, 2008, 02:43:27 PM »
Strange little pair this. Oozing with uranium yet quite crudely made - full of striations and bubbles and roundish is the best way to describe the bowl. In addition the ribs are on the top surface! The only other glass I have with the pattern on the 'using' side is American carnival glass. Ground base rims and no marks. Any ideas please.

You did not mention dimensions, but the picture suggests a mayonnaise set.  they usually had an underplate.

Hard to be sure from the picture since thickness and exact colour are necessary for identification but I suspect that could be Lumina by WJ Rozendaal.

Thanks Jay, who didn't link to his own work in progress . I think you might be right. The yellow colour can be seen the base of the saucer (too much uranium to get a good colour) and the glass is relatively thin for pressed glass. Size later

The bowl is 10.5 cm ish in diameter and the saucer is 14 cm. Here you quite often find dessert sets that include underplates/saucers. If I had to describe the colour I'd say Smiley yellow

Christine your set reminds me of Cambridge Decagon dinnerware. I can't count the sides, but there should be 10. Sometimes Decagon is marked, sometimes not in the dinnerware line. Color would be what we call light Emerald. Size would be close to cranberry belled bowl & underplate. Ken

Thanks Ken. It's a possibility but it's not light emerald - its definitely yellow. Not sure the quality is good enough either. Are the ribs topside on Decagon - I can't tell on any of the pictures

Christine...ribs are in the interior or top of the pieces. Decagon dinnerware was just that...dinnerware so the quality wasn't what you would get with the later lines. Same with the Round dinnerware line. Pictures can be viewed differenty on some monitors I know & on mine the color appears as Emerald not yellow or gold so thats why I said Decagon. Ken

I thought of Cambridge, too, but the "full of bubbles," even on dinnerware, seems suspect.  It also seems like most of their Decagon bowls flare a bit at the rim, and I agree - a bit yellower than the light emerald I've seen.

It's not emerald by a long way, definitely yellow. The quality really is quite poor, the bowl isn't even round. The base rims are ground - does that help?
