Any ABP Experts out there? Cut Pitcher
« on: May 28, 2008, 06:27:27 PM »

Hope someone can help me.

I have searched all through my resources.

Hawkes, Libbey, Dorflinger, Hoares, Krantz, Bergen, Pairpoint, Egginton and my misc. books.

I do not have the other catalogs such as Maple City, etc.

Main motif, Hobstars 16 point.  Miter cuts with zipper notches.

Double cut handle.  Heavy blank weights about 5 pounds.

Hobstar is also on the bottom.  16 point as well.  I know these patterns can take a while to find,
but I am hoping someone will recognize it.

Some obvious similarities with my Flagon decanter, I suspect mines English,

Maybe not enough to suggest same maker,
so, not a lot of help really :D

Looking for these patterns sometimes is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

And a visit to the eye doctor. :o

But I did find another piece of cut glass that I think is from Canada by Gundy-Clapperton called Hob Star.

So all is not a waste and I will continue to look.

Who knows maybe I will come across your pattern.  :)

I just wanted to let you know that I've seen your post and am keeping a lookout for the pattern while I try to ID some other stuff I've been working on.  You're absolutely right, though, about the needle in the haystack!  I also find it hard to mentally translate a pattern on a jug to one appearing on a bowl.

Have you seen this bowl posted by Leni a few weeks ago?  I believe it's Gundy-Clapperton's Hob Star, does it match yours?

Thank you krsilber!

I have not seen Leni's bowl and what a beauty.

Mine, although it has no Hob stars and I could not even tell you what it is used for but here it is.

Notice the same pattern as on the Cologne which is also void of Hob stars.

So you are very right.  A Hob star pattern made to fit other whatnots, which in turn adds to the confusion.

Andy what catalogs I have here I will research your piece and continue the search.

My pitcher reminds me of blanks that were made by Union Glass Company with its clarity.

The piece in post #5 is likely JD Bergen's "India" or Pairpoint's "2-Cut Octagon," two patterns not easy to tell apart.  If it's triangle or wedge shaped, possibly it was part of a set.  I can't see the shape well.

crystal clear, I also will keep an eye out for the pattern on your pitcher as I research several pieces that I've had around here for awhile. It sounds like we have many of the same catalogs, although I do have a Union one I will take a look through first.

Identifying ABP is such a time consuming project, and a lot of times even the signed pieces weren't given pattern names. It is quite rewarding however when one is finally identified after hours of searching!

I agree with Karen on the interesting triangular piece - Bergen and Pairpoint are two of the many companies that made similar patterns, although Sinclaire, Hawkes, Fry, Dorflinger etc also did their own take on those "quilted" designs.

It's enough to drive a person crazy, lol.

What are the dimensions on the triangular piece?  Pairpoint made a triangular blank that's 5" diameter X 2.375" deep (12.5 cm X 6 cm).

Eglass - you have a Union catalog?  I was once told this was a Union blank, but haven't been able to confirm it.  Maybe as you're searching for the pitcher you'll come across it.

Kristi, I must have been hallucinating - could have sworn I had a Union catalog, but according to my last shipment I ordered one from Home Cut Glass, Elmira, Ideal and Blackmer. I'm sorry about that, but I'll go through the ones I DO have and see. At first glance I would think Pairpoint on that piece, but that's just based on the few pieces of rock crystal type cut glass that I've had by them.
