Wanted: images of Caithness weights 1969-1979
« on: February 26, 2009, 06:33:57 PM »
If you are interested in Caithness paperweights you will most likely be familiar with the online catalogue on Scotlandsglass. Whilst such a project will never be "complete", we are trying to get as close to this as possible. After entering all images available to us, images of a few weights are still missing - and your help with filling the gaps would be appreciated.

1969
Whilst not considered a paperweight by Caithness (and therefore not included in the Charlton catalogue) most collectors consider We Came in Peace, produced for Harrods, to be the begin of Caithness paperweights.
There was a second version of this, however, sold at the Wick Factory Shop only: an image of this second version is sought.

For the next years (until 1979) Volume 1 of the "Collectors' Guide" is the basis of the online catalogue - all images are online. For weights with several colour variations, however, only one of the colour variations is shown in the "Guide", however, in most cases. Images of "missing" colour variations are wanted:
1971
Spiral - Purple/Red yellow version
1972
Coral - Blue orange version
Cased Coral - Blue damson version
Cased Coral - Orange
Jellyfish - Green red version
Jellyfish - Purple
Tropicana (style 1) - Pink yellow version
Tropicana (style 1) - Purple
1974
Space Rose - Sienna ruby version
Space Rose - White
1975
Reflections - Blue green version
Reflections - Damson
Sentinel (style 1) - Green purple version
Sentinel (style 1) - Red
Space Beacon - Damson green version
Space Beacon - Purple
Vortex - Green blue version
Vortex - Red
1978
Morning Dew - Yellow red version

If you can provide images of any of the above mentioned weights, to be included in our catalogue, you'll be mentioned as copyright holder, of course, with a link to your web page (if you have one). As a small reward I'll also send you a digital copy (pdf) of the entire Caithness Collectors' Guide Volume 1 (if you are interested).

Hoping to hear from you, I send my best regards - Wolf

It is even posted here on this very board :)

http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,2386.0.html

I have two of the limited edition, numbers 622 and 718.
They are quite varied in color.

Images can be provided should the need arise.

Whilst the "Wick version" is mentioned there, images are of the "Harrods version".

In order to be able to better describe the differences, however, I have checked again what I got on my shelf - and discovered in Reflections issue 9 (of 1994), where the story of the "Harrods version" is told, by lucky accident the image is the "Wick version". ;D

Differences:
1. Date: Harrods July 1969 only / Wick July 21st 1969
2. Astronaut: Harrods "waving hand" / Wick holding a flag
3. Shape - difficult to describe without images

So - for Frank: don't search your backlog - the image is in our temp dir.

Yes - colouring for this item varies quite a lot - good additional images of this "historical piece" are always welcome!
Thank you for your offer - please, mail me your images (letter symbol in the left column).

Best regards - Wolf

On the second page of that thread there is one posted with the inscription :
Tranquility Base : Eagle Has Landed 20 - 7 -69

He appears to be waving tho and is marked CG 19/500

Now that spring and natural light has again returned to these frozen lands I'll be able to get som new pics of my versions,
not happy with the old ones.

Ooops - missed the second page again - that's what I usually do  - sorry!

But that seems to depict yet another version !
A different engraving (as compared to the Wick version) and a different text - including a different date: the "Eagle" had landed on the 20th - and Armstrong put his foot on the moon on the 21st - the latter date being engraved on the Wick version (according to the Reflections magazine - have never seen one of those myself).
Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_11 for more detail.

Hi,
I bought a lot of paperweights at auction and amongst them was a Vortex Red (it says red on the certificate but looks more pink/ raspberry colour).
I've tried to post pictures but I'm not technically minded enough to resize them.  :-[
I'd be happy to email photos if you want to PM me with a suitable address.
Sarah
