Heavy Green Vase w/ Red Frit - Unusual - Anybody know Who???
« on: April 07, 2009, 07:08:27 PM »
I have owned this vase for several years and have, as of yet, been unable to attribute it to anyone. It is very well executed and stands 8 inches tall. It is 4 inches in diameter at the waist and has a nicely polished pontil. The glass is approx 1/2 inch thick. The age wear on the foot would lead me to believe it is mid 20th century. It has a much nicer look in person than in the images. No one that I have forwarded pictures to has ever seen a piece like it. Someone suggested I post some images here. Any help, suggestions, thoughts, or an actual attribution would be greatly appreciated.

My first guess would be Skrdlovice who made similar things - but I must admit I've never seen this particular design before.

I have continued to research this piece based on the suggestion of Skrdlovice, and believe, based on similar works that come up on google images, and also some images found in Picasa Web that the vase may be by Miloslava Svobodova. I am looking for any comments either for or against the attribution. I found many pieces by Svobodova for Skrdlovice that had similar frit on the exterior, and most with frit only going partly up the body of the vase. I did not find this exact form on line, but the work seems uniquely similar.  Any thoughts??

Thanks in advance, Craig

Hi Craig,
hadnt seen this post before, i agree with Ivo, they immediately say Skrdlovice to me,
I suggest you ask a moderator to put Skrdlovice? in the title, so that Mark Hill , Jindrich ,Graham,
or some other Sklo expert will notice it.
I'd like to own it :D ( just noticed you say a polished pontil mark, i think thats unusual for Skrdlovice! you dont mean a nicely polished base , do you?)

Good Luck,
Andy

Hi Andy, Craig and friends
I agree that this one  is probably Skrdlovice. I would not try guess designer name, in Skrdlovice it is not unusual to have almost same type of product designed by two different authors (one has got an inspiration?). I will keep it mind and will attribute it exactly as soon as I will get Skrdlovice pattern books (in progress).

Please do not take all Dusan's attributions at Piccasa web as given true, sometimes he simply guess. But anyway, his huge collection is really challenge.

Jindrich

Thank you Jindrich, I usually take attributions with a grain of salt until I am confident of the information being provided by someone I do not know... especially when it comes to pictures.  Usually gives me a direction to look, or a new question to ask. I am new to this board, and my experience with glass from mid century Czech companies is, especially after looking at the images at Picasa Web from several collectors, to say the least.... wanting for a severe level of education..... I am reasonably well educated when it comes to early Bohemian like Loetz, Kralik Rhindskopf.....  but I find the Czech glass I am being exposed to, to be gorgeous... and I want to know much much more about it.....

As far as the underside of the vase goes, it has a very large and nicely polished pontil with a ground rim. I have added an image below showing the pontil. I have also added a couple of images that show the colors more true to life.

It was suggested that I ask a moderator to put "Skrdlovice?" in the title of this thread...  being new, I am not sure how I do that.... So I will simply ask here to have it done. If there is a different process, could someone please let me know.

Thanks again to everyone for your help with this vase.

Craig

Hi Craig,
none of my Skrdlovice has a pontil mark, all flat polished bases, so i am having second thoughts,
im sure others will  have seen far more examples, so i will wait for others opinions.

Cheers
Andy
(Jindrich , do you have a web link for Dusans collection, i have not seen it)
