5 Mystery Vases
« on: October 25, 2005, 12:30:43 PM »
I bought these a while ago, and they've been quietly sat on my shelf - was just wondering if anyone recognised them?

The blue, lilac and smoked vases are 15cm tall, the green bulbous one is 10.5cm and the very peculiar amber one covered in a strange honeycomb of indents is approx 12.5cm.

The lilac one has a very nice 'ring' to it

Tossing in a complete guess without knowing until vidfletch comes along, but does the first green one have the look of caithness about it?

Hang on, I've seen that cushion-button effect (on the gold vase) before, except it was on a blue vase, cylindrical and labelled "Hand Made in Western Germany". Give me a few days and I'll see whether I can find it for comparison.

The green one doesn't really feel like the rest of my Caithness - it's a little bit sharper round the rim.

And West Germany - that's interesting. I've never seen one before, or anything even vaguely like it, so I couldn't even hazard a guess as to where I thought it might be from!

And I forgot a bowl too - it looks Czech to my untrained eye... can anyone naysay or confirm this?

Number 1 has to be Ikea or similar large scale distributor.
Number 2 looks German to me, it has this typical "rauchtopaz" colour which was used by Joska and other Zwiesel makers (but also by Maastricht).
Number 3: the model is very Riihimäki, but I've not seen Neodym glass from them - so I would sooner look in the direction of France.
Number 4: I believe this is Maastricht - I have a similar one with the sticker, but it would not surprise me if simple cylinders in light teal or sea green were made elsewhere too.
Number 5:

Here is a little brother of the dimple vase, very lightweight glass. I was expecting Germany or Italy for this one, the purple one next to it is equally lightweight and seems to be Elme, I was told. Why Italy? Because of the similarities to lightweight bottles made for Grappa bottelers.  Very curious to see what Cathy comes up with.
Number 6 - the bowl: my first hunch is Belgium.

Gosh, thanks for all that. It has all been duly noted down - otherwise I will end up forgetting!  :D

Ivo - your purple one is by Elme and I believe designed by Gunnar Ander c.1950s.  I have have three of these  in cased cobalt blue. ( I have also seen a third colour - I think it was a mustard like colour if I remember correctly).  Two have their original labels on.  One has the Importer George Hardy Swedish Art Glass label plus a smaller one on the base which just says "MADE IN SWEDEN".  This latter label is on the base of a second one also.

I really do like these

Mod: Important Note. As at 19 May 2020, a thread by Wayne advises that George Hardy was not the importer of various glass items as has been stated in threads within the GMB. The correct importer name is Hans Geismar.

Thank YOU! Great to have a hunch confirmed. I immediately punched the info into my latest gadget - a Brother P-touch label maker which prints neat little labels you can stick underneath & you can finally rid yourself of the post-it notes inside vases that will not come out when you want them to .

       I spent half an hour yesterday trying to get a rolled up piece of paper out of a Whitefriars piece - to no avail.  It had mysteriously travelled down to the bottom    Tried chopsticks, knitting needle, meat skewer, even resorting to levitation, and in the end poured water in and left it to go soggy.  It eventually came out BUT the water had made the felt tip pen run, and the paper became papier mache, so couldn't read the details including pattern number!

I'm gonna get me a Brother P-touch label maker!

Oh yes a Brother P touch lable maker. I have used one for a number of years and the one thing to remember, its almost permanent. I used mine to actually lable things for sale and they looked so nice, but boy did I have a dickens of a time trying to remove them later on. I don't know what my customers thought and then it got too expensive anyway and time consuming. So use them knowing the info will be there. Terry
