Small UV-reactive vase
« on: October 23, 2009, 09:09:55 AM »
This 10p charity shop vase looks so very dull, but on closer inspection it feels weighty at the bottom and of some degree of quality.

The rim is striated with bevelled edges.

The whole thing is the colour of modern Vaseline, rather than the old, green-tinged version.  The base, when held under an anglepoise, looks exactly like an open jar of Vaseline - it even has the shine as if it's wet.

Height is 5½".

I would be interested to know who might have produced such a bland looking piece of glass.  It is UV reactive, so it has one saving grace!

Thanks in advance,
Stuart.

Sorry.  I would have said it is uranium glass, but am new to the UV terminology.  I have taken a photo of the vase whilst shining my rather rubbish little key fob light on it.  It's a bit blurred because I happened to be falling over at the time, but it serves the purpose I hope.

That surprises me! I have no idea. The vase looks modern (mid 20th C onwards) and I would have said Italy, but now I wouldn't even like to hazard a guess. I give you 50p for it  ;)

This whole uranium thing is a bit strange, isn't it?  I can't stop shining my light on it and smiling.  :)

I thought Italy but I have no idea why.  I suppose it's the nice finish and the other-ness.

Thanks for the offer but it might be a keeper.   :) :) :) :D

I just wonder if it might be a relative of this item I found on ebay?

It would certainly lend some weight to the Italian thoughts.

I don't see any similarity in the pieces. Italians did do a good bit of uranium glass, but they tended to use the uranium in the casing glass. Your glass looks more like custard glass to me. Is it cased? or does the white glass have the uranium?

Well, well, well.  I found another one of these, which was identical except for a label on the base.  The label reads...

MARKS & SPENCER
St Michael

So that's it ID'd.
