Murano/Peter Layton vase?
« on: January 03, 2010, 01:19:45 AM »
I have been informed that this particular vase could be Murano.  On the other hand  I am not convinced and think it could be Peter Layton.  The vase Measures approx. 22.5cm in height. Widest point measures 13.5 cm.  The actual weight is 4.5kg.  The vase is very heavy and just below the base you can see a patterned white tale. Unable to find one similar or the same for identification reasons. Can anyone help me. Thanks!! ::)

Pretty vase. I googled Peter Layton and found him and his associates in London. So your vase is English art glass.

if you are correct in thinking that it is Peter Layton. I'm not convinced.   ;)

Best to email Peter directly and ask the studio to confirm. Email on his website http://www.londonglassblowing.co.uk/

Can we see a base picture please. Equally it could be contemporary Polish or Chinese. There's an awful lot of it about, some good, other less good.

The glass looks similar to the vases at http://www.londonglassblowing.co.uk/frameset.html. aa knows English glass, though, so I agree writing Layton to verify would be a good first step.

I understand why people might think it looks similar but I remain unconvinced.  :)

I often think that glass is like wine. There are an awful lot of bottles of wine out there, and when poured they do look similar, but they don't always taste the same!  ;D

Adam, when I read you were not convinced, I became unconvinced as well. I couldn't find an example of Layton's work that had the spiralling cane, nor the pulled loop pattern. I associate the spiralling cane with the Orient. It would be interesting to hear from Layton about the vase.

I read the original message again. I originally thought it said the vase was signed by Layton. I see now that I read wrong. As said before, the spiralling cane makes me think of the Orient. I would expect Layton to sign their work.

Hi there
im pretty certain this is a modern chinese piece, ive seen identical ones in quite a few shops now alongside the ones on the big thick clear plinth bases and the "sculptural" ones on the plinths. There is alot of this style cropping up at fairs at the moment too, ive now also seen a few with fairly convincing age wear to the base which have been rubbed with sand paper
But i could always be wrong  :)
