Topic: Perthshire Paperweights "Gavel" weight

...what is it exactly ?
The centre cane looks like an "T"  or perhaps more like an "auction hammer"?
Does anybody know more about it?
Or is it not Perthshire?

Sorry Keith, but it's not Strathearn, because as far as I know they never made weights with central sections like that.

From my own knowledge, backed up heavily with info from the book The Complete Guide To Perthshire Paperweights, I would say that most of the features tie in with a Perthshire Paperweights PP1 design. But the fire polished base indicates pre-1978, after which the base was hollow ground. But if the central cane is a "T" then that would indicate one of their less common "letter canes" (normal used in only a few designs) denoting a date of 1988. And that does not fit with the base finish. Also the post-78 pattern differed by having an outer ring of twists and then a ring of canes.

PP2 design could fit except, again, for the base which after 1978 was hollow ground.

I seem to remember a "gavel" cane being mentioned by somebody at a paperweight club meeting. Whether this is one of those, I can't say.

Needs somebody with a better understanding of the many variations of Perthsire Paperweights designs and specials to sort this one out.

Some 18 months ago a similar weight (same T cane, but different colours and only 1 cane circle around the complex T cane), fire polished base and Perthshire paper label, was sold by "photo" (and most will know that he's not unfamiliar with Perthshire weights) described as "A very unusual Perthshire paperweight, it has a gavel or little hammer in the central cane. Size approx. 2.5 inches and has a dark blue base colour."

Don't know if it helps, I sold a Perthshire weight a few weeks ago, not the same pattern but had the'T' in the centre, searched carefully with a glass I found a letter 'P' within one of the pink outer canes.

Would you still have images? As the weight contained a 'P' signature cane, the 'T' cannot be the annual letter (1988): to my knowledge weights with annual letter canes didn't contain a 'P' cane.

Hi just checked feedback and the pictures have gone item no 170403532439 definitely had the 'P' and pretty sure the same or similar in the centre. The guy who bought was a collector so he may be of help if you contact him, sorry could not be more help.

Chris, that was very reasonable to avoid putting the buyer's details in this message.

However, perhaps you could contact the buyer on behalf of all of us in this discussion. Contact from you, as the seller, would perhaps be more productive than from one of us as just interested parties to this message. If you mentioned this message, with a link, then perhaps the buyer could be encouraged to join in here (if they are not already a member, that is) and post some images of the weight.

Perthshire weights such as these are unusual and I am sure everyone would benefit from the extra information that could be gained.
