Topic: Egg Shaped Piece in Silver Holder

I know this is one of those thats cannot be attributed, but my question is what is it? The lady (in her 70's) I bought it from said her grandmother use to keep her rings in it so is it a jewelery case? 7" high with a 3 1/2" diameter. Top lifts off, glass is fairly heavy at 1/8" thick, no markings on the silver. Thanks, Ken

IMHO I would say Yes, that is what it is.  A Jewelry Box, or also know as a Jewelry Casket.  Here is a link that *just gives you an idea* as I have not yet found one *exactly* like yours yet, or really close.  So here are just some examples and you will note that one is *Egg-shaped*

Thanks Rose I appreciate it. Went to eBay & looked at what was there, but most seemed to be of a more recent vintage, but the porcelain egg shaped one is at least close.  Ken

Hi -- IMHO, it appears that your glass casket (box, or case) has an enameled design on the top -- at least that is what looks like to me.

Wave Crest did a dotted enameling on their (milky) glass wares, and you can see some posts (links) here if you use the Search box here.  Just to see them, and the dotted enameling done on items.  I do not think that Wave Crest did an glass egg though, but at least the enameling is a similar idea to what it *looks* like on your item here...........IMHO.

I agree with Rose re jewellery casket. I have a more recent oval one (without stand) somewhere which was made in Italy (label unreadable with wear) which my Mother brought me back when she visited Venice in the 1980s.

If it's real silver, it should be marked....

It is "real silverplate" so evidently your definition of real means EPNS, sterling, whatever.  In the US) if the parts were subcontracted out by a glass manufacturer to a plate operation it would not in all probability be marked. We have God only knows how many hundreds examples of this in US glass with silver dating back a century. Ken

Sorry, I thought you said there were no marks.
I was under the impression that all silver is/should be marked, also that EPNS is marked as such too.
Ignore me if you like - I know very little about silver or epns, or other metals, I don't have much interest in them.
It's quite possible things are different in the states.

Yes Christine I know EPNS is copper, nickel & zinc & technically should not have used the term I suppose.
