Is this..... a Clichy jug? mezza filigrana threading?
« on: March 13, 2011, 04:32:30 PM »
I am so excited!  I am trying very hard to spend very little at the moment, but I still can't resist going to the car boot to have a look round.  I bought two things today (I'll post the other separately)
So this is number 1 -  I know this is broken and badly glued  , but I still thought that I could learn something from it as it is completely different from anything I own and I just loved it.  So I brought it home to reseach and :rah: I found this (scroll down to third item I think it is)-

http://www.great-glass.co.uk/shops/shop5-1.htm

So is this what I have but in jug form?  The interior is completely smooth, the exterior has horizontal very fine ribs on it .  The base is exquisite with a tiny immaculate round polished pontil mark.
And is there anyway of getting this glue off and reglueing it does anyone think?  I would like it not to have yellow stripes on it if possible.  If not it doesn't matter  :)
thanks in advance for your comments

not meaning to bump this, but now Paul has suggested doing something similar can I ask again?
I would like to get this glued triangular piece off and reglued.  Is it appropriate to do so with something so old or should I leave it be?  also, is it best to send it to a glass restorer to have it done.  I'm worried that once the yellow glue comes off (and that's a big if, I could ever manage to do it myself) reglueing it would pose a problem.
Either way, is it appropriate to do so to this piece?
thanks for any thoughts on this.

It is like restoring a painting. If you think it is worth the effort and cost then why not?

Having just read the other thread, I'm afraid I suspect this might be epoxy resin here.
I have a great deal of experience with the appearance of epoxy resin. It oozed out of tons of furniture and other stuff in my childhood home. My Dad liked playing with it.

Sue, I thought I probably agreed with you, so I've just had a little dabble at scratching some of the worst excess of with my thumbnail (nothing to lose really)......and it just flicked off  :rah:, so possibly it's that horrid old Bostick that dried amber yellow?  ooh that's hopeful.  Glad you said that and made me have another look at it :)

Bostick tended to stay clear. (wonderful smell that stuff, and great for playing with and squidging in your fingers). I know Bostick well too. Dad liked glue. Lots of glue!

It is sounding hopeful if it does just "flick off". Would a soak in warmish soapy water help loosen it, I wonder.....

the thing is though, if it falls apart I'm worried I might lose some tiny bits of glass maybe.  I need clear head space and no children around ( and preferably for it to be a sewing/embroidery repair rather than glass  :24:) - I'll think on it    - Leni we cross posted  ;D
