Blue Grape footed Bowl - ID help please
« on: June 03, 2011, 09:51:59 AM »
Hello all and thanks for your help as always.

I have this bowl that at first glance I thought was Jobling but I don't think they ever made a grape footed bowl.  The thickness and style with the 3 feet being made from the bunches of grapes is very much like their Hampden Rose bowl.  It is frosted on outside (sand blasted) and smooth on the inside and 8 inches diameter (20cm) and 3 inches tall (8cm) - lovely powder blue colour.  I ahve not seen this before and I suppose with grapes I should perhaps think USA?

best regards  Markus

Hi Markus,

I believe your bowl is Etling, and may be embossed lightly or in small lettering somewhere on the underside with Etling France.

Hi Markus,

You should be thinking France (or just possibly Britain) rather than USA. The design is one of the Etling commissions; no. 152, probably designed by Georges Beal. The lack of a mark is interesting though - I had a pink frosted one a while ago which was also unmarked, though it came with a chrome plated rim which was marked 'Made in England'.

If it is unmarked then it could have been produced by Choisy-le-Roi after Etling closed, or it's possible the moulds were transferred elsewhere. I wouldn't entirely rule out Jobling as they did work with French designers and did apparently share some designs and moulds with an as yet unknown French firm. The colour of both this and my pink version are much more consistent with Jobling production rather than Etling and there is a gap in our knowledge of Jobling post 1937, however this is just speculation.

Hey Guys and thanks for your imput....I think I will stick with my initial thoughts of Jobling then but it would be nice if it was Etling...there is deffinitely not a mark and I know how much they hide them too.  thanks all

Hey Guys and thanks for your imput....I think I will stick with my initial thoughts of Jobling

Why? The Jobling connection is purely speculative; it is however known that this design was produced for Etling under the pattern no. 152. Most of Etling's pressed glass is believed to have been sourced from Choisy-le-Roi, though there is some evidence that Sabino might have made some models (An Etling fish is included in Decelle's Sabino catalogue raisonne and Sabino curently have at least one old Etling pattern (Vase art nouveau V148) in production). Again, I believe it's still unknown whether they supplied Etling or simply acquired the moulds after Etling's closure in 1938.

Certainly Choisy-le-Roi/ Sevres continued to issue various 1920s/30s patterns post-war. Etling patterns are known with Sevres backstamps, likewise some Hunebelle designs that were produced at the works continued to be made and sold with paper Choisy-le-Roi labels after Hunebelle stopped production in the late 30s.

Either way it seems more reasonable to describe your bowl as Etling rather than Jobling.

I own a similar model with a man in the center, as it's an advertising for "les vins du postillon" (wine) : http://www.flickr.com/photos/glassholic/6517079433/in/set-72157625963973876
It was design by Cesari, as you can see here : http://www.art-deconcept.com/envente-verrerie-cesari-350.html

That's interesting. I've had several pieces marked 'Cesari' in the past. I'm 99% certain they were also made at Choisy-le-Roi. In fact I used to own this wine coaster marked Cesari - I've seen the exact same model with an Etling mark.
