marbled glass vase..can you help with I.D. please?
« on: August 27, 2011, 04:01:20 PM »
Hello again

I'm hoping third time lucky with this piece of glass as haven't had much luck in identifying other pieces yet, if anyone could point me in the right direction I would be most appreciative.

It is a lovely marbled green/plum/white cased glass white interior, ground pontil to base. previous owner thinks 1980s?

many thanks in advance

Hi m, thanks for the reply

yes the ground pontil has a matt finish - can that be used to narrow down the ID? v. interesting!

Well I'm not sure  :-\
And if you like it and bought it because it was well made and you like it, then origin is not important (perhaps important if you are wishing to sell though as currently Chinese glass doesn't probably sell as well as maybe more known established glass making countries.)

It's an attractive piece but had I spotted it I must say I would have been put off by the uneven pontil mark and what looks like a removed label - if that's what I'm seeing.

With a glue mark that looks pretty tough - why would you remove the label?

I know a lot of people judge a piece of blown glass by the pontil mark, and when you look at Whitefriars in particular, you can see why.

Just musing. I agree with 'm'

The pontil mark and its finish are only clue to origin.  I'm not sure about this piece either.

Why? Whitefriars' pontil mark finishing is no better or worse than any other maker's work with a similar pontil area finish.

Hi bfg, here are some examples of the neat polished pontil marks seen on Powell/Whitefriars glass.

Though not exclusive to them Lol has some eBay sellers would have you believe.
Normally a sign of quality and much nicer than the rough snapped off finish left by many makers.
Think the Chinese quality thing stems from the fact that that the bases are normally ground flat but not polished or the pontil rod mark is ground out but not polished?
