Inscribed Orrefors "Ariel" Vase "Translate"
« on: September 22, 2011, 11:36:44 AM »
I would like to know what this inscription is and why.

"SKIM JONKOPING 1966 1:APRIS HERR"

Other info about the vase would be great too...

The scene is that of a bullfighter.

Thanks,
Tony

Hi Tony,

Google translates it as:

"SKIM JÖNKÖPING 1966 1ST PRIZE MEN"

So it looks as though it was a 1st prize awarded to A man called Skim Jonkoping in 1966.

Your pictures are very small though....is it possible to show a larger one of the signature?

I believe JÖNKÖPING is a place, not a man. As for the picture size this is the best I can do...Sorry.

However this vase was featured on the Antiques Roadshow and they could not tell me what the

inscription was either.

If you go to this link below just hit the arrow and you can watch it as aired on TV.

I reckon I'd have paid $40 for it too - despite being such a revolting theme, I do love Ariel work, but only that low price would persuade me - and I'd sell it. Bullfighting is disgusting, I wouldn't have that theme in the house, no matter how superficially pretty.

Hi Tony,  it might have helped if you had given that information from the outset?
I will see if I can find out what 'SCIM' means in case it is an acronym. You did say it was SKIM, which came up as a name in Google.

I've no idea about the translation, but I read it as a prize for men in that particular town I assume for some event in that town.

This will not have been your average prize, bull fighter or no, it would have been rather a fine thing to win then as now.

I guess you could have the inscription removed if you wanted but don't touch the signature on the base....

If you make the longest dimension of your pictures about 700 pixels you would have much more useful pictures. The upload size is per picture not per post

SKIM is probably a golf tournament "Skandinaviska internationella mästerskapet" (Scandinavian International Championship) played between 1912-29 and 1956-79.
