Tri-Color Thorn Handle Basket
« on: December 01, 2011, 09:17:23 PM »
Picked this up today primarily because I'm wasn't certain I'd seen a tri-color basket before. Standard ground pontil, white base, Uranium ring, probably Bohemian but was looking for confirmation. Thanks, Ken

Thanks Frank. Whomever it is they knew what they were doing as its cased over the pink where the green was applied then cased over the green where the white was applied. You can just barely feel the bump where each layer was laid/mated to each layer. The thorn handle is actually a little on the sharp side. I bought it for the craftmanship involved & I'd not seen a three color version before. Its basically 6 1/2" diameter with a 3" height to the crimps. Came from a small estate (lady was 92) collection of seven pieces of Victorian era art glass that she inherited in the 60s according to her daughter. A couple of other pieces were more spectacular & out of my range. Ken

Actually turns out its early Loetz...IDed by Dave Peterson (Mr. Vaseline Glass) who steered me to Brian Severn & his Harrach project which had museum photos of early glass from multiple manufacturers in this area.

Unfortunately Christine all email attempts to reach him regarding the basket have failed even though I noted the statement on his site that the problems had been fixed.

I would personally be surprised to find this to be a Loetz basket....

I have seen images of the Passau cases identify some of this production as Loetz, and there are actually many pieces in the cases displaying this type of glass which can be traced to Kralik through decors now known, and also links to the Butler Brothers catalogs which imported Kralik and Welz to the US market in large quantities.......

IMHO one issue with the Passau cases, being a privately owned museum (collection) is that they do not generally appear to go back and correct earlier mis-attributions as new information becomes known.  The current curator for example, does not have much interest in going back to correct issues with the work of the previous curator......

I agree with the basket most likely being Bohemian........  It is a fabulous piece of glass......  Nice find.....
