Topic: Identification of Hen on Nest Sets.

Hi!

I am new here; I know a little bit about antiques and glass but, not nearly enough!  I have two sets of milk glass Hen on Nest, quite alike but, still different. I was hoping I could get some help with identification.  I understand there is a fantastic book with all the details but, I can't afford the book...

Both hens are milk glass but the glass is slightly different in the two.  Both have red glass eyes but, one has smaller eyes than the other. Both have the smooth style basket with no makers' marks that I can find. Each hen is approximately 6.5 inches end to end and 5 inches across.

One hen seems like it might be an Atterbury but, there are so many things I don't know.

Hi Kristin.  Belated welcome to the GMB!

I wish I could help but I can't!  I'm sure you've already looked at the 'Fenton Hens and Roosters' http://fentonaddict.com/index.html section of the Fenton Addict website, which shows the Atterbury hen, which (if I'm reading it correctly) Fenton copied. 

As you probably know, the GMB has been out of commission for a while, so maybe someone with more knowledge will come along now that it's up and running again.  Here's hoping.

The hen looks like it was made by Atterbury milk glass.  Here is a link to a similar looking hen that sold recently.

If you google Atterbury Milk Glass Hen On Nest you should be able to find a lot of examples attributed to this company.

I came across another link that goes into detail about identifying fenton type hens on nest.  If you scroll down in the article it has part of a picture of an Atterbury hen and explains the difference between it and a Fenton.

I did follow up on all of the links.  From what I can understand of the Fenton Addict page, the hen in the middle with the red glass eyes is an Atterbury. From what I read, it seems when Fenton used this mold, they did not use glass eyes; they used molded round/bulgey eyes, actually part of the mold.

The hen on Antiques Navigator, does indeed appear to be my hen.  (At least, one of them.)

Did you see that I have two slightly different hens, yet BOTH have glass eyes?

I am just wondering if there are other companies out there that made (or STILL make) hens with glass eyes?

Also, I wonder where I can get the exact measurements of Atterbury hens.

Hey,

I took another look at the photos.  To me it looks as if the smaller glass eyes are replacements.  Other than the smaller eyes the chickins look the same but it is hard to tell looking at photographs.
