Stunning large mauve vase with bubbles
« on: May 01, 2012, 02:03:41 PM »
What Ho! I have recently acquired this lovely piece which looks to be of excellent quality. Its 9 1/2" tall and weighs over 5kg. It is hand blown with bubbles and has a flat polished unsigned base.
Can anybody help me with maker and date pls? TIA Wolfie

I'm thinking it could be a Czech vase, Milan Metelak for Harrachov, in which case it would be probably be 1960s. I've seen this shape with this type of bubbles ID'ed as such, but I'm not entirely sure. Anyone like to concur or disagree?

Could you please check how the base is finished off, Wolfie?
I'm absolutely positive I've seen these in TKMaxx, contemporary Chinese.
They're very attractive.
What I can't remember is if these ones are some of the ones which now DO have all polished up shiney-bright round pontil marks. I think they were before that, but can't be certain.

@ Astrid: I have to admit that there is a vague resemblance to Metalak's vases, but the ones I have seen always had the bubbles rather evenly distributed, and none in the base. So I would rather disagree...

It is a very attractive piece (even if it is really TKMaxx -- and Chinese)

Michael

It's the randomly shaped, sized and situated bubbles in the base part which give it away, mostly.
But I would like to see the base.  :D

I've seen one in a Prague antique shop described as Metelak where the bubbles were not entirely evenly distributed. I mistrusted it, didn't buy it, and when I got home I did find some references that made me think that one could have been Metelak after all.

But you're right Michael, those bubbles weren't in the base. I stand corrected.

Thank-you! Polished flat - with a few scratches. Not an instantly recognisable Chinese finish - but they are doing "polished flat" these days.
Sorry not to be more help, but I'm still pretty convinced it is Chinese.
