Is this bubble-stopper decanter Whitefriars?
« on: June 18, 2012, 11:37:47 AM »
I have been handed this decanter to sell for charity on Ebay.   I think it might be Whitefriars - it is good quality glass, but with a lead haze, and has a tear-drop bubble inside the stopper, and a concave polished pontil mark.   I would be very grateful for any help in identifying this.   Also - is there any way of removing this "lead crystal haze"?

The haze is, I'm afraid, water-marking. The only way to get rid of it is by a lengthy physical process of tumbling with appropriate abrasives.
As to id, I would suspect Poland for it's origin.

Made by Dartington, designed by Frank Thrower in 1975, pattern number FT188 also known as Directors Decanter. Capacity 92cl, later increased to 100.

Many thanks, John, for your very helpful reply, and to others for their advice.   I shall now know how properly to describe it on Ebay. :)
