Thanks for the warm welcome, this is clearly a case of beginners luck.  I found this piece at a thrift shop in Maryland, so I have no idea where it came from and how it ended up in the U.S.  I am Czech on my mother's side, so I was partially drawn to it by the art and part by the place it was created. 

No wonder he didn't sell very many, it is a fish that looks like a bear...

But as you say yourself, you were drawn to it by the art that it is - not what it was supposed to represent.
