Three continental glasses
« on: March 25, 2014, 11:50:57 AM »
I recently bought these three glasses together. They are all made of soda glass  and have pontil marks. The fist has a high conical foot whilst the other two have quite dainty domed feet.
Their heights are 14cm, 13.2 cm and 14.2cm.

All three exhibit tool marks and the glass contains small air bubbles and inclusions. The second one is also slightly crizzled. The third has an inverted hollow baluster stem - is it a gin glass?

None of them possess the real solidity and clunkiness of the Lauenstein glasses, in fact they have an air of refinement.

Can anyone point to where and when they were made? Holland, France, Belgium, Germany?

Has anyone used the V and A free opinion service? I'm thinking of going there with some of my glasses incuding these three.

I've visited them on several occasions and spoken to Reino Liefkes, who is very helpful.

The walk in event is only for one afternoon per month from memory, and think it's the last Tuesday afternoon of each month, but you'd better check before going.            They do offer to assist with id via email at  ceramicsandglassatvam.ac.uk  -  inserting the rats tail where necessary, but obviously don't guarantee results (or at least the result you want) - and of course you can attach pix with your email.     Sometimes there is a wait of week or so before getting a reply.

best of luck.

Hi Stuart, Peter will be along to correct me shortly but I think your middle glass is possibly Saxon or Thuringian - see http://www.glaswolf.de/Kelchglas_Sachsen.296+B6YmFja1BJRD0yOTYmcHJvZHVjdElEPTI1ODUmcGlkX3Byb2R1Y3Q9Mjk2JmRldGFpbD0_.0.html - and the foot of the bottom one reminds me of Hessen glasses, but I've not seen one credited to Hessen with a bell bowl.  Sorry I can't be of more help.

Neil
