Help needed with Stuart Crystal Marking
« on: March 28, 2014, 11:53:54 AM »
Are there any Stuart experts who can throw some light on this glass? It has what I’m pretty sure is a Ludlow Pattern with a dimpled Beau pattern type stem. The Stuart Mark is the one with a curl on the end of the  “ t” in Stuart .   There does not seem to be such a combination in all the research that I have carried out so far.  Has anyone got any clues? Thanks

Definitely not Ludlow.  The bowl is close but the stem had a knop in the middle (see photos from Stuart catalog 1964).

I'm not saying at all that this glass is not by Stuart but i have seen a few marked glasses and perfume bottles marked Stuart and they are clearly are not made by Stuart there  either pressed glass and some cut glass, the copied mark on the one's i have seen is a dead give away it just does not look like the real thing, i have just charity shopped two i wish i would have kept them to show here, to add to the confusion the wife also informs me that the glasses would often get marked up with the wrong pattern and then cut but these were normally destroyed (or went home in the workers pockets), she also informs me some designs were altered for different markets around the world, (my wife used to mark the glasses up at the Royal Brierley factory), regards chris.

A read through  http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,56107.0.html  may help you clarify the type of mark.  I suspect it is a Thirties mark (like #7) in that topic.  A major problem with Stuart seems to be a lack of catalogs of any vintage at all.  There is no definitive book that tells you when various types occurred and unfortunately Stuart (as a UK maker) is now defunct and its records ??????

Ross thanks for your help…… Yes the mark is the same as image 7 and all the pieces have the same mark.

Thanks Chris too for your help…. maybe these are a hybrid. I bought t over 40 pieces of different sizes etc at auction. Did not pay a lot and they are of super quality so I’m not too worried. Still would have liked to know more about them.

Thanks again

Hi, have you tried the replacement website in your searches. It is a long, long process going through them but usually gets results. Sometimes the pattern is there but not named. I have done a lot of searches and have halved the time it takes 😃 would have look but this hospital does not have a good connection. We'll worth a go. Will look at my records when I'm home later today.
Pete. :-)

I have but came up with nothing using a search on fan and criss cross, which is what Ludlow is described as

I’ve been through all the usual sources, replacement sites etc  till I see grainy pictures of crystal in my sleep . The pattern is definitely “Ludlow” on what looks like a “Beau” stem. Maybe someone was just having an off day at Stuarts. Thanks for your interest.

It may have been a commission for a shop or wholesaler and thus not a standard product.

The stem on this was used on several Stuart glasses, these are Melrose, Beau and Carlingford i'm sure there is one more but it's in storage. I have about 60 different patterns signed by Stuart (i seemed to have collected these for a bit), there always good reference material when i come to sell them. I have tried to photo the signature but there always very hard to see in good sunlight let alone at night. As you can see there are no cuts to the base and the cuts on Ludlow reach the base outer rim, which is why i thought yours were a bit off kilter for Stuart crystal and the middle fan does not look right for Ludlow.

There all 4 1/4 inches in height 2 inches across the rim and  2 1/8th inches across the base.
