Please Help to ID Old AMETHYST RIBBON TRAILED VASE
« on: April 04, 2015, 02:04:55 PM »
This is a thickly cased amethyst vase with beautifully applied clear ribbon trailing
It's round at the bottom and pinched in at the top to form more of a lobed square shape
9 inches high, has a ground pontil and is extremely heavy
Does anyone recognise it please?
Thank uou

Hello and welcome to the board.  Could you add photos of the base and a top view looking into the vase please, so we can get a proper idea of its shape and how it's been finished? Thanks!
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

This is a shot looking down into the vase.

This is the base. The pontil is quite large, almost two inches and unpolished.
I bought this in a second hand shop in SW London and thought originally that it might be Whitefriars but I haven't been able to find this unusual shape in any catalogue.
Thank you very much for your response.

Welcome to the GMB Abigail. :)

You can safely rule out Whitefriars. The overall appearance coupled with the way the base has been finished is likely to probably indicate Chinese production in this instance.

Thank you Greg.  Chinese! That's a surprise with it being so heavy.  Have you seen another like it somewhere?
Appreciate your help

Hi Abigail - Although I haven't seen your particular vase, the design looks very modern to my eyes and reminiscent of many pieces sold in contemporary home furnishing stores, in places similar to TK Maxx.  Pieces of this nature are commonly purchased from suppliers in China and also Poland amongst others. However, the ground but matte base finish on your vase is usually indicative of Chinese production in many cases.  Although size and weight are difficult indicators to make a judgement on, they can also sometimes also hint towards Far Eastern production, especially in conjunction with a matte base finish. Hope this helps a little, hopefully others will contribute their thoughts in due course.

That's very helpful information. Thank you.  I've learned something!
I thought it was old because of the wear underneath but maybe it's just been mistreated.
I'd like to ask about some other things that I think are old but don't know about so will start another thread or two
Thanks for sharing
