Paul Ysart early later Caithness or a fake
« on: April 05, 2015, 11:14:02 AM »
A friend asked me to post this for them unsure if it's an earlier Moncrieff or with the flat polished base maybe one he made later at Caithness. Also aware these were also copied.

Thanks for looking Chris

Hi.  The signature cane looks good to me.

All the fakes I have seen have a central base area polished concave.  The early Caithness period Paul Ysart paperweights often have a very gently concave polished base, whereas Harland era are usually polished flat.

It is a very nice example of a genuine 1930s (or perhaps late 1940s) period Paul Ysart "Triple Flower" weight.

The PY cane is correct and the base finish, with a small remnant of the cracking off scar, is ok too. Paul Ysart made many early weights with a flat polished base but usually for weights with a clear ground - the polishing preventing the pontil scar being seen through the dome.

I suspect this weight is close to 3.25 diameter.

If I was a jealous person, then this weight would cause me a deep emotional reaction! Good job I have a calm and considered approach to my obsession collecting. :)

I remain calm and considered. No talk of finding such things at car boot sales will ever get me flustered. :)

Would if I told you how much he paid for it ;)
Just confirmed it is indeed 3.25 diameter.
Thanks again Chris

I didn't want to rub it in too much but now the secrets out yes it was indeed a £1 from a carboot in the Suffolk area :)

Obviously I do not have as calm and considered an approach to collecting as KevinH...

But I did say that there are still Paul Ysart bargains to be had out there.... ;D 8)
