Twin handled strap work decanter or carafe help please.
« on: June 12, 2016, 11:04:19 AM »
One of my favourite recent finds and i think has some real age, looks a nice lead blue colour, no seeds, dirt in the fold and creases and wear on the tips of the straps on the base with a rough pontil.

No evidence of having a stopper, ie no circular marks or wear on the inner neck so maybe cork? or a water carafe.

8 1/2 inches in height and 5 inches roughly in width.

Any thoughts would be welcome, regards Chris.

Hi ,
Several of these are recorded in the Rijksmuseum catalogue volume 2 ,1 with identical engraving to yours , all are dated c 1850/75,
Quote,  " In the second half of the 19th c several glassworks including Leerdam started producing carafes based on 17th c originals " end quote.

The originals don't have this type of engraving and are very thinly blown and very light ,very much in keeping with other 17th c vessels,

cheers ,

Peter.
