2 lovely etched flagons decanters, poss Dutch?
« on: June 25, 2017, 10:59:40 PM »
Hi, i found this pair in a charity shop!! They are about 8" tall with a ground out pontil which is unpolished, rough in fact. They depict a windmill, a bird and I think a couple of sailing ships in 3 segments with grapes and vines in the other 3. The necks have no sign of grinding for stoppers and they have a pair of lug like handles on the sides of neck. I would think they are pretty old and possibly Dutch because of the windmills. They are certainly very interesting, distinctive and I would love to have some info about them, TIA Wolfie

this one looks similar?
https://scottishantiques.com/victorian-table-glass/decanters-flasks-carafes?product_id=6433

and has a similar pontil/base ?

It says c.1935 and has a good description at the bottom of the listing mentioning appearing in Hill Ouston 1936 catalogue.

Another one half way down the page,  but I don't know what I'm talking about really, and neither does the seller of one of these two examples you have now, the one that M posted, and this one here http://www.happytown-catalogus.nl/20/index.php/index/cat/35-G as one is dated 1800 and the other one 1935  :P

The Dutch add describes it as a wedding decanter, but the description in M's link sounds a bit more acceptable, but again, I only searched in Dutch because it was mentioned ...  I couldn't help otherwise.

I'm sure someone will clear it up.

Anne I think they were 'revisited' as revival pieces at various points in time.

I have seen many of them (in photos) and they don't all look the same.  I think there are some old ones and some more recent examples maybe?

I have never seen them (funny that, being Dutch) so I couldn't tell the difference, but I'm sure you're right.

are they Dutch?  :)

I've always wondered.

Windmills can be seen in many European countries I think?  not just Holland. So I've always wondered where they originated, or where the design originated.

I would not know if they are  :D it's the seller in the Dutch link who says so ... even though I haven't set a step over the border for a while, they do have a lot of windmills and they're part of the history and culture, plenty of boats with all the rivers and canals, a couple of birds can be found too but nothing with vino except for consuming it... no vineyards in NL, or definately not at that time, be it 1800 or 1935.

Yes (I love Holland    :D ) but that windmill doesn't look quite like a Dutch windmill to me really.
If I look at images online they don't seem to have a square house with a roof on them, the shape is more triangular.

or this

And also the windmill sails, there appear to be four on the Dutch windmills and they look bigger than those on the engraving whereas  the engraving seems to have four shorter ones plus maybe two more hidden?

This one is Czech and has five sails

I'm thinking maybe  a Czech windmill shape to the building?

or maybe Slovenia?

I can find windmills with six sails in England and have found one in France.  But the building doesn't look the same shape as the engraving and neither the size of the sails
