Impossible Signature On 2.2kg Sculpture/Bud Vase Help
« on: March 04, 2018, 03:18:04 PM »
It is signed to the front and dated 2002. I can't decipher what is written and hoping that someone just recognises it, or the work.
Pale blue glass & lilac.
9" high x 7" wide x 1.5" deep (max)
I have rubbed cornflour into the signature, but it hasn't helped me any.
2nd photo is 1st name, 3rd is surname, I guess
Any help/ideas?  ??? ???
TIA
Della

I thought it said, Muriel  ::)
I can't see Lucas or glass in either word  :-\
I'll try to get a better picture tomorrow using Bisto powder (think I still have some in the cupboard  ;) )

aaaah...  ;)
(best use for it  ;D )

Chris Lucas is on the Isle of Wight, and trained at IoWSG a long time ago.
I also think IoWSG made solifleurs of a similar construction. That pushed me a bit to my liberal interpretation.
I can't see any Muriels.  ;D
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Nice!!  reminds me of a perfume bottle by Pauline Solven for some reason  Perhaps the applications or something made me think of it.  Maybe an 'influenced by' piece if 2002.
Can't make anything of the signature at all - sorry.
It looks as though it belongs to an earlier period than 2002 so wonder if it was someone who'd been working with earlier makers as Sue says.

Does the last name end in len or den maybe?
(can see why you say Muriel but I don't think so ... could it read David?)

Solifleurs were a common design in German glass (probably loads in other countries as well but those spring  to mind)  Could it be a German studio maker maybe?

I really can't tell what it says, M and the poor light today didn't help much.
I will try again in the morning.
The back of the piece is actually the bottom, like the reverse of the Mdina knot sculptures, the artist has then flattened and ground an original edge to make the standing base. If you get what I mean  ???

I think I see what you mean.
So does it not stand up as a solifleur then? (apologies if I have completely got the wrong end of the stick  :-[ )

oh wait... is it a wall hanging solifleur then? or meant to be positioned against a wall?

Just to clarify what I mean about it reminding me of pieces earlier than 2002 - it's quite 'organic' in design and made me think of quite early studio pieces actually.

No it stands up, M, where the maker has flattened, then ground the side of the item (now the bottom when standing), but I guess it was originally made on the mat, although the sides are textured.
I'll take a picture of the back in the morning and then you can see what I mean, but imagine the back of a Mdina knot, which is originally made as a flat item and then part of it is flattened to create a standing base.
Lord, the written word is so much harder than the spoken. My flipping hands are typing and wanting to make explanatory gestures at the same time   :P
