Please ID this British studio vase
« on: September 12, 2018, 12:32:53 PM »
I've recently begun to doubt the identity of certain pieces of studio glass in our collection.  :-\

This vase was purchased from a gallery in Yanwath, Cumbria, about 15 years ago. The gallery has closed down now, but it was run by a very interesting couple. I mourn its closure, because it was the one place within an hour's drive of our remote rural spot where we could find contemporary art glass.

I'm sure I was told the vase was made by Norman Stuart Clarke. However, there is no signature and it does not resemble NSC's work. I may have been looking at his glass in the gallery and got confused. It happens.  :-[

5.25" tall, 5.5" rim diameter, 2.5" foot diameter.

It looks like Jane Charles' work to me, but I don't know if she's been in Cumbria.
She was, in July at the Priory's 40th anniversary thing, which you might be interested in attending if it's still on. :)

There's a link to her website there. (and below)

Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Earth without art is just eh.

Ah! That would make sense. It does resemble her work, though she usually signs her pieces.
And thank you for the link about the Lanercost exhibition. We were over there just two years ago. We had a bit of a fight to get to the ruins past a very talkative member of staff, but nice gift shop/exhibition area, and yummy gluten-free cakes in the cafe. I gave up sugar shortly afterwards.  ;D

Oh dear, the exhibit ended on the 4th.  :'( Don't how I missed that - I usually check for events in north Cumbria.

Jane Charles did sell work in Cumbrian galleries.I have purchased quite a lot of her work locally at auctions as it filters out of homes in to the salerooms. The gallery up the road used to stock her work on quite a large (ish) scale.

I take it you're in the north too, FB? What luck, finding so much of Jane's work at auction. If I were not so rural, I'd be haunting auctions rooms too. It's probably for the best that I can't.  ;)
I met Jane many years ago when she gave a talk at the NGC. I bought one of her small faceted sculptures, but didn't realise until now that I also have a vase... According to her website, Blackwell House (Windermere) stocks her work. It's a couple of hours south of us, but worth a visit. We went to a fantastic Powell exhibit there some years back.
