Victorian lilac pressed glass creamer?
« on: July 14, 2019, 08:36:22 PM »
I would be very grateful for any info on this lilac jug or info on this unusual colour. I think it’s Davidson but cannot find it in any of our literature.
Thanks Mike

The lilac is caused by sun purpling. Clear glass often contains manganese decoloriser, which goes purple with prolonged exposure to UV light. That's been on a window sill or similar for a long time

Hi Christine, that’s interesting I never new that, funnily enough the only thing I’ve seen similar colour were a pair of Clear Newfoundland dogs on eBay a while ago that had a faint lilac colour, obviously ideal window Cill ornaments. I think most of the Victorian colours of this era were a bit more bold.
Thanks Mike

Well I never!

Sunpurple glass,  Patternglass.com in USA have some interesting reading on the subject of dealers turning glass deliberately purple for their own gain. My mother collected clear Flint glass, only have 5 large cabinets full of it. But I don’t think dad would like me placing it all in the garden to catch the rays 😎
Thanks

It requires a lot of UV to achieve purple. Mostly in the UK, it's just a gray tinge

The heart pattern on this and handle seem more in line with Davidson than anyone else . Pattern no 187 and later the William and Mary Pearline range. Perhaps it was a Purple Pearline range...........
Only kidding"".....
.. cheers Mike
