New Year's Eve Conundrum - Mystery Face Jugs and Beakers
« on: December 30, 2006, 08:25:10 PM »
Having had a real "wow" with my Christmas Conundrum, I thought I would try my luck with these "Kings head" jugs and a beaker. Firstly (again) I must say that I bought these because I really  :) like them. Secondly I do not normally collect glass post 1910 and I suspect these are later, but there was something about them that just made me want to own them  ::)

I bought them seperately. The pink frosted jug was 25 years ago in Bermondsey, the beaker a couple of years later in Lincoln and the blue jug on eBay about 2 years ago. There have been a couple of other pieces on ebay, but I was outbid by someone else who did not know what they were or who had made them but, like me, just loved the pastel colours, the crisp moulding and - above all - the design. I have asked at a couple of glass fairs and get replies from dealers like "Oh, yes. We had the jug and six beakers at the last fair" (Why can't they take them to the Fair I am attending?). No association or maker has ever been given.

Not marked anywhere as far as I can see.

I just want to know who made them and when? Anybody out there who can help?

Or anybody who has some for sale and will now charge me an exorbitant price as I have said how much I like them  ::)

I love these too.  I know someone who has one sitting on a shelf, and I picked it up to admire it - BUT I didn't ask who it was by; stupid or what?  Probably someone else here will know who made these, but if you don't get any response, I'll try and find out.

Thanks Max. I think they are 1920-1930 art nouveau. But I am a bit of a Philistine in this period  :P :

I'm sure Toby jugs are not likely to be scandinavian...

You're not in Kent or East Sussex are you Andy?  Just wondering if you saw one in the same place as me.

Not Toby jugs, face jugs. Toby's are full body. I am sure we have had these before but I cannot find them again. Are there any playing card symbols hidden in the design? Hearts, clubs etc?

They are wearing crowns, they look like swedish (or Danish) kings, similar to faces on
Holmegaard decanters/carafes. (colours have an icy feel to tmem)
Hi Max, no, im in Royal Berkshire! I think i may have seen them on the interweb somewhere!

Regards Andy

ps my other guess would be Sowerby, but im sure there much better experts than me
on that subject!

lol Ok, nowhere near me then.  :)

The face jug I saw before was (from memory) a frosted peachy colour and quite large.  Strange how I can't find anything about them on the net though.  Unfortunately the person I need to ask is away for a few days.  :-[

There was a green one on eBay a while ago but it seems to have dropped off the Completed Listings. I don't think it was attributed to a maker.
