Not S.A.L.I.R Any clue to ID ? Or what costume ?
« on: September 27, 2010, 11:43:33 AM »
I took this fine little glass to Cambridge yesterday, but no-one could really place it.  One of the stallholders suggested S.A.L.I.R, so I thought I'd see what our Murano people thought.  The engraving is good, but I'm not sure what it is supposed to represent.  A Venetian clown was suggested.  There is a hint of a mask over the eyes, so that is perhaps a possibility.  Initially I thought it was depicting some kind of sport...with the triangular net at the bottom....

Any opinions please?   :) :)

Doesn't look Venetian to me at all - it depends too much on light to bring out the details which suggest more northern origins. Could it be cricket?

Doesn't look Venetian to me either nor does it bear similarities with examples of their style that I've seen, I think he's holding a baseball bat, therefore have you looked into Steuben?

I know that what he's wearing doesn't fit with baseball style as we understand it but perhaps worth checking online for early 20th century baseball attire!

Just a thought

Looks like some form of theatrical pose to me with an oriental theme.

Last comment, in the photo, look at the small net behind the players, bit like on the glass, presumably the net pattern at top of vase represents netting over practice enclosure, a little like cricket nets practice areas?

I would say it's nothing at all to do with Cricket or baseball - the holding of the Bat(Stick) is completely wrong. I know accuracy is not paramount in these things but that would be too wrong! The only sporting option I could possible see here is some form of martial art.

You may well be right Yesvil but Steuben do seem to make glass connected with baseball http://shop.mlb.com/category/index.jsp?categoryId=3842698

Wow, this is a tough one.  It looks like to me that it is an acrobat clown walking a tightrope.
