This query is going to be a long shot, but here goes. Over the years I have heard, just once or twice, of a range produced by IOWSG called Seawood (not Seaward which is well known). I recently discovered that the studio sold two pieces from their archive in 2005 called Strapped Seawood. The pieces are dated "circa 1975". That is about all I know. I have posted a couple of extra details at: http://iowstudioglass.wikidot.com/seawood.

Does anyone known anything more about Seawood? Sue, this is your sort of thing - early IOWSG. A picture would be amazing. Seawood must be out there, but where?

Thanks for your help.

Anton

Have you asked Ron W for information? I would suspect a typo unless more information or examples are uncovered.

John

I own the two pieces mentioned, and entered a bit of a discussion about the name on the IoWSG forum.
We never really got to the bottom of it, Seawood was a name that Elizabeth mentioned for this range, but as it never was an official range, it sort of faded into obscurity and has never been used officially.
To my knowledge, this thread of mine was the only time the name "Seawood" ever came up, and it does seem to have been passed around a little. I did push for a definitive answer, but got no replies.

I suppose it would be perfectly ok to call it Seawood, but I still think it was possibly a name Elizabeth came up with, at a later date than the glass was made.

It was the early experimental range that ended up being made a bit more simple, to be Aurene.

It came in two colourways, one being the teal blues of Mdina, because they were using up the colours they had brought back from Mdina, but they also used the darker cobalt blue of IoWSG.

The pieces are pretty much the Aurene pattern, but have a partial casing and a load of thin strapping around the partial casing.

Here is an image of;

A Blue Aurene, a Gold Aurene, 3 Cobalt blue "Seawood"; 3 Mdina teal "Seawood".

The pieces mentioned, bought from the archives, are the stopperless bottle and the hexagonal pot.

In that case perhaps the name is best left alone as it is only likely to lead to confusion...

Other colour variations also crop up: https://picasaweb.google.com/Johnmj100/IsleOfWightStudioGlass#5603585877833728770

These bottles have those 'Mdina like' greens and blues but no strapping/trailing: https://picasaweb.google.com/Johnmj100/IsleOfWightStudioGlass#5986125079682364274

Aaaaaaargh. I can't see your pics, John. Internal server error _500 thingy again.

;D So, do we drop the "seawood" thing entirely?

As I said, the only time it was ever brought up or mentioned was in that thread I started on the forum, after I bought those pieces, which ended up without any formal decision. (depsite my pushing for one)

But it does appear to have entered the folklore.  ???

No you don't, these photos are public. I imagine Sue's inability to see them has something to do with the software running on her computer.

Thanks Sue, you're a star!  :D If I had been shown a piece of Seawood I would have thought they were what has come to be known as Strapped Aurene, with a bit more blue. They are very like M1, M2 and M3 in Mark Hill's IOW book on page 139 but with more cobalt or teal blue. I have a picture of strapped Aurene here: http://iowstudioglass.wikidot.com/exp#1970s. Also see page 56 of Mark's book.

I think I will retain the Seawood page on my web site, just for the sake of documentation of the name. I'll point visitors to the Aurene page (http://iowstudioglass.wikidot.com/aurene) for comparison. I might move the picture of strapped Aurene that is on the Experimental page to the Aurene page to keep it all together.

Sue, may I use part of your picture (the right hand side with the Seawood pieces) on my web site? I would, of course, give you full acknowledgement. Many thanks for your consideration.

It is good to get to the bottom of this question so quickly. Thanks Sue once again.

The only google account or sign in thing I use is for a google group I'm in.
It doesn't appear to keep me signed in, I can never find a thingy to sign in on it when it comes to anything other than that group.

Anton, if you write to me using the envelope in my profile, I can send you some uncompressed and unresized images.

In the discussion on the IoWSG forum about the archive pieces I bought, it was just David Tolley replying to me. He passed the Seawood name on from Eliizabeth then. So I don't know exactly what she said; and I can't remember everything that was said in the thread.
Is there a record or archive of the forum still remaining anywhere?
