Engraved German Tall Glass
« on: November 15, 2014, 05:00:48 PM »
Hi all.  I need some help with this tall glass. From my limited German and Google I get 'Exhibition iv Hamburg' from 'Ausstellung iv Hamburg' but cannot find anything relating to an exhibition in 1904. I could be wrong on the date of course as the iv could be something else 'iu' maybe ?. It has a ring to it and is 16.5cm in height with a lip diameter of 7.5cm. Thanks
Pete. :-)

The cutting and engraving is beautiful and so precise, some real skill involved Pete.

Thanks Chris. It is a cut above the others I have had on here ;D I am being drawn to antique glasses more and more lately ! I seem to have accumulated a number of them that is slowly turning into a  small Collection! I just cant seem to list the 'favourites' amongst  them.

Imagine trying to get the writing in line, the correct gap between each letter without cocking it up, would take a real craftsman to have the nerve and experience to make a glass like that, try getting someone to do that today under 400 quid.

Lovely piece!

Just a question, doesn't it just read 'Ausstellung in Hamburg'?

Thats a thought lol. the 'u' and 'n' do seem to be identical.
The vertical and horizontal lines in the smallest windows in the top are perfect as well. Not had time to do more research yet but thanks for the comments so far.

They probably didn't do such things totally freehand. There was likely some marking up first

for further information you could get in contact with:
http://www.lichtwarkgesellschaft.de/. They had exhibitions every year.
I am living in Hamburg but I didn't saw this building on any picture or photo. Perhaps it's a project for the garden exhibition in 1906.

Or there you will get all information you need:

is it at all possible it was engraved as a glass from Hamburg but with the building on it being where the exhibition was held?  therefore it might not be Hamburg but might be another country?
The one closest I think it could be might be the Glasgow exhibition of Science and Industry 1888
building here - check out the windows on the right of the main entrance and check out the spires
It could also be an 'artists' depiction' of the building rather than an exact replica?

Hope this helps a bit.
