Beautiful Enamelled Glass Vase + Cameo (what is it?)
« on: September 25, 2016, 12:17:27 AM »
Hello everyone,

I have bought a very beautiful vase online,
but I'd like to know:

- Where it's from..
- How old it is..
- What kind of glas it is..
- And who could have made this.

I can't find any vase with the same form, or enamal painting.

I know it's handblown, because there's a pontil mark.
(could just only upload 4 pictures)

I hope somebody can tell me more about it.

Thank you very much!

R.Antonis

If you reply to yourself (or to me  :) ) you can add 4 more images. You can add 4 per post.
I would suspect this is mould blown, not hand blown, but has the pontil scar because it has been taken from the mould and put on an iron to decorate it and perhaps finish off the rim in that fancy way.
I think you need flying-free or somebody else who knows more about this era of glass than I do for identification. This is very much Flying-free's sort of thing.  :)

I also suspect you might find it contains Uranium. Do you have an ultra violet light torch to check?
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Chopin-Liszt,

Thanks for replying.

It might as well be mold-blown, I don't really know.

How do I reach out to flying-free, or do I just have to wait for him to find this topic?
(I'm new here)

I don't have UV-light by the way.

Thank you!
R. Antonis

It's mould blown by hand. I suspect the rim is cut. My guess would be Bohemian because of the yellow under the raised gilding

As Christine said,  I agree it's Bohemian either Schachtenbach or Josephinenhütte.
It's possibly around 1860 ish.
If you search you may find a match for the enamelling on it and perhaps the applique head.
Could we have a clear photograph of the base please?
Thank you.

As I suspected, it didn't take too long for flying-free or Lustrousstone to find you.
Welcome to the board.  :)
I'll leave you all to your discussion about this very unusal piece and just sit back and learn.
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

As Christine said,  I agree it's Bohemian either Schachtenbach or Josephinenhütte.

that should read 'Probably either Schachtenbach or Josephinenhütte'.

Thank you all for your help,

I still couldn't really find any vases with the same shape/mold,
nor did I find the same enamel style.

For SCHACHTENBACH:
1)  www.antiquitaeten-schlemmer.de/glas/glas-19-farbglas.htm#objekt3
     (if you scroll down)

2)  www.antiquitaeten-schlemmer.de/gross/schachtenbach-vase2.htm

3)  From Schachtenbach, this one comes closest to mine, in terms of the glass.
      http://www.pressglas-korrespondenz.de/aktuelles/pdf/pk-2014-3w-frauenau-schachtenbach-2014-katalog.pdf
(The vase on the 8th page.)

For Josephinenhütte:

2)    From Josephinenhütte, this one comes closest to mine, in terms of glass, cameo, and enamel style.

I really don't have an idea. I went to an antique dealer in my city.
One told me: Opaline glass, the other one told me it wasn't.
So that doesn't really help me.

All I know is (and that's maybe a little hard to see, just from pictures) that the glass
isn't really shiny, it's more hazy and doesn't look as smooth as it feels.

Thank you very much!!
R. Antonis

(btw: Didn't know about the 4 pictures per post. Thanks !)

Can you take your pictures against a plain white background please?

If photographs are done against a dark background it's impossible to see the actual glass (which is difficult in photographs anyway compared to real life).

Could you also put the height and weight of the vase please?

And is the base polished completely flat on the applied (?) foot ?

It is opaline glass and very thick and looks good quality judging by the cut rim of the vase.

It is matte and smooth because it is satin glass on the outside - it has been finished to look matt ( I don't know how they did this).
Hopefully Christine will be able to help with more information.

The matte finish will have been created using acid to etch the surface
