quote from Rosie .............."(and a good guess from Paul S. Wink )".    No guess  -  it's just that I'm good with birds with a lot of neck ;)     Like all these artistic pieces, it's a very stylized production  -  in reality the cormorant's beak terminates in a hook  -  but then who wants reality in art. :)

    The common cormorant or shag
Lays eggs inside a paper bag
The reason you will see no doubt
It is to keep the lightning out
    But what these unobservant birds
Have never noticed is that herds
Of wandering bears may come with buns
And steal the bags to hold the crumbs.
Nancy

Well, I'll go to the foot of our stairs Mother  -  I'd have laid money on that being Lear, and instead it's Isherwood - wonderful and thanks very much Nancy, it is just the thing to
get me going on a drab Sunday morning.              I am a fan of his, but really only for the Berlin stories (disappointed to find out he was batting for the same side).
Just to make life difficult, there are, apparently, two separate species within the cormorant family - one called a cormorant, and the other a shag - and it seems they are not easy to differentiate (unless I suppose you are a shag or cormorant ;)
But think they have perhaps interchangeable names in other parts of the globe.           Isn't Kevin our resident ornithologist?

quote from Cathy..............."I thought cormorants were shags?"..........and this is where I probably get kicked out........
so Cathy, you mean I've had it wrong all these years, and what I should have been saying at bedtime was  'd'you fancy a cormorant' :wsh:

You skate on thin ice this morning Paul.......bearing in mind 'Beavers' were not allowed.......be afraid, be very afraid!!

Anyway, I've got a signed hedgehog now as well.....and if anyone mentions  the prick(le)s, there will be a riot!

I'm off to see if there is anything interesting in the Café :wsh:

Thanks Chris  :kissy: The Cormorant was a bargain,  but I think I paid all the money for the hedgehog....but with the two Foxes, I am now getting a nice collection....although I am still sulking over missing the turquoise Ram.
Oh yes, and I like the vase as well...........is it neodymium?
